“Invictus” Hanging recycled burnt wood and wire floating tree sculpture
Invictus is Latin for “unconquered or undefeated” and was a popular poem written by that name from the late 19th century by the English author William Ernest Henley.
The speaker in the poem proclaims his strength in the face of adversity:
“My head is bloody, but unbowed….
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.”
Alan also remembers his father Arthur with this piece, who despite much adversity after losing part of his right arm in World War 2, forged ahead with his life, the concept of the ‘Invictus Games‘.
Much as Alan and all the survivors of the Black Summer bushfires in 2020 have also had to do..
The “Invictus” tree sculpture is a symbol of this struggle and rebirth, as this is part of an actual burnt tree from those fires, with a new “tree” growing onward and upwards.
‘Invictus’ was sold the first day it was on display at The Lazy Lizard!
